A very small red house on the hilly landscape of “Winter” reveals Mildred’s need for at least a hint of rich color in the grayest of scenes, a tendency repeated when she was asked to recreate from a 1969 black-and-white photographic print of a wintry hamlet scene on the south shore of the Missouri River.
